ECOCEM France began in 2007 as part of a joint venture with ArcelorMittal Méditerranée aiming to value the granulated blast furnace slag from cast iron production. This opportunity has allowed ArcelorMittal to acquire an equity interest in Ecocem France. ArcelorMittal increased its stake in Ecocem France from 30% to 49% at the end of May 2018.
ArcelorMittal has strengthened its link with ECOCEM in order to make best use of a coproduct, the granulated blast furnace slag (GBS or GBFS) produced by its blast furnaces in France.
The first French production site is located in Fos-sur-Mer, close to two ArcelorMittal blast furnaces. It began production in 2009. The second production site in France is in Dunkirk, built in 2017 and starting production in 2018. Thanks to the Dunkirk plant, Ecocem France has doubled its annual production capacity on the market, which is now 1.5 million tonnes of GGBS.
ECOCEM products are now specified by the leading concrete experts at major contractors and used by the majority of ready-mix companies. They are also specified by architects and major engineering and environmental consultants on account of their unique technical benefits, resistance to sulphates, seawater and fire, and their unsurpassed environmental benefits which allow users to apply for environmental labels. Given its 17 kg CO2/t carbon footprint, Ecocem GGBS is the best available low-carbon solution.
A growing number of major projects are using Ecocem GGBS, such as the A89 motorway, the ITER project, the LVG SEA, the Odeon tower in Monaco, the Smartseille urban project, the Marseillaise tower, the ENS Saclay project, the Hekla tower, the Condorcet campus… our list of references continues to grow.
